Who we are
Our Service
We’re a confidential and free phone line and online service, giving you information about contraception, pregnancy options (including abortion) and sexual health. We’re proudly pro-choice, non-judgmental, woman-centred and independent. We work alongside hundreds of trusted healthcare providers in Victoria, to link you to the services that best suit your needs. 1800 My Options does not provide medical, legal or financial advice or counselling.
There are 5 pillars to the work that 1800 My Options does:
- A phoneline: We support an average of 650 callers per month, addressing callers’ sexual and reproductive health concerns and providing the details of relevant health services;
- A website: We provide online, evidence-based information about contraception, pregnancy options including abortion, and sexual health, with links to trusted sources for more information;
- A geomapped database of trusted healthcare providers: Our online map of services is filterable by a number of categories including services provided, fee information, intake criteria, and languages spoken;
- Live data regarding service availability and accessibility: Through working closely with healthcare providers and caller trend data, we are able to track trends in Victorian’s access to sexual and reproductive healthcare
- Capacity building, support and health promotion: We build the capacity of the service system to respond to gendered sexual and reproductive health needs, and the capacity of service seekers to identify and meet their own health needs.
Our Principles
Our guiding principles include providing all Victorians with:
- A non-clinical and non-judgemental service
- Centralised and comprehensive service information;
- Referral pathways to relevant, trusted clinical, support and counselling services
- Non-preferential referral pathways, based on each client’s needs and location
- Coordinated and interconnected approach to service delivery.
Our History
1800 My Options was first launched in March 2018, as part of the Women’s sexual and reproductive health: key priorities 2017–2020. This strategy aimed to reduce the barriers affecting women’s access to reproductive and sexual health services in Victoria.
1800 My Options is a service of Women’s Health Victoria and is supported by the Victorian Government.
Since our launch, we have supported thousands of Victorians with their sexual and reproductive health needs.
An independent, external evaluation of our service by the Nossal Institute for Global Health in 2020 found that 1800 My Options increases timely access to essential sexual and reproductive health services, reduces stigma around abortion and contraception, and services diverse communities across Victoria.
